Research Experience:

California Institute of Technology Pasadena, California
  • Dissertation research involves theoretical issues primarily in nonlinear control theory, dynamics and robotics.
  • Formulated controllability tests and open-loop trajectory generation algorithm for stratified kinematic control systems, which are primarily applicable to robotics problems such as legged locomotion, grasping and parts-orienting.
  • Formulated controllability test for control systems with unilateral inputs, which is primarily applicable to systems controlled via physical contact or mechanical systems with thrusters.
  • Initiated collaboration with a visiting Hungarian researcher to investigate the dynamics and controllability of a rolling wheel model which exhibits unstable rolling motion, or ``shimmy.''
  • Conducting preliminary legal and technological interdisciplinary research, specifically considering the consequences of the disparity between legal and technological time scales.
  • Collaborating with a visiting Japanese researcher to develop a biped robot to provide experimental verification of the theoretical controllability and trajectory generation results.

Teaching Experience:

California Institute of Technology Pasadena, California
  • Organized and lectured to a graduate student and faculty member reading group on controllability, delivering five 60 to 75 minute lectures, Spring, 1996.
  • Teaching assistant for a graduate robotics and kinematics class. Responsible for grading homework and exams and assisting students, 1994-1995.
  • Teaching assistant for undergraduate design classes, including the ``design contest'' class. Delivered a lecture on patent law, 1993-1994.
